PROJECT IMPACTS

Enhancing Europe's Strategic Autonomy in Energy Storage Technologies

Driving Technological Independence, Environmental Sustainability, and Economic Growth

STRATEGICAL

  • Europe’s resilience and strategic autonomy by reducing the EU’s technological dependence on other countries in technologies related to energy storage.
  • Interoperability of solutions and systems.
  • Boost R&D in this field.
  • Promoting technology transfer and excellence in the European Defence sector.

TECHNOLOGICAL

  • Improve partners’ capacities: reducing dependence on technologies from non-European countries.
  • Strategic reorientation in the area ofenergy storage, both defence and civilian.
  • Defence (in general, particularly FOBs, incl. Ministries of Defence and Armed Forces): studies, life cycle analyses, recommendations and design guidelines, among other project results, will benefit the energy storage sector in stationary applications.
  • Generate new skills, technologies and manufacturing capabilities in European industry.

ENVIRONMENTAL

  • Decrease of FOBs’ carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Extend the lifetime of storage products and technologies increasing efficiency throughout the life cycle, minimising fuel consumption and reducing raw material and energy consumption in procurement, maintenance and waste disposal.
  • Facilitate the reusability and recyclability of storage systems: design for reuse, design for recycling and eco-design.

ECONOMIC

  • Costs reduction in the energy storage value chain: promoting profitability, simplifying processes and overcoming restrictions such as limited access to resources and suppliers outside the EU.
  • Strengthening existing energy storage value chains in Europe, making them more autonomous and resilient to global threats.
  • In the medium to long term: to contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the European defence industry by creating new market opportunities for stationary energy storage in civil and defence applications.

SOCIAL

  • Market expansion and companies growth in a technology-intensive sector: job creation and employment opportunities for qualified personnel.
  • Carbon footprint reduction and environmental impact of defence missions will reinforce the commitment of the Armed Forcesto society with the environmental objectives and the reduction of emissions at a national and European level.

As a dual-use technology, the NOMAD Project´s objective will have a similar impact on the civil sector of the European energy storage industry.
